December 24th: Christmas Dinner

Reservations are a must. You may use your meal tickets.

December 17th: Joy To The World

Dedicated to the true meaning of Christmas, this program was presented by The Willows residents. Readings from Christ and Christmas and Miscellaneous Writings, both by Mary Baker Eddy, hymns and carols were all part of the program. Richard Ozenghar played the piano.

December 8th: The Willows Candlelight Dinner

Joyful and fun, in keeping with the spirit of the holiday season.

December 1st: Luncheon at Claremont's Pavilion

The three-course meal was followed by an original musical titled The Wonderful World of Christmas.

Thursday, November 30th: Craft Club Bake Sale

Our semi-annual Bazaar and Bake Sale featured baked-by-residents sweets for the holiday.

November 23rd: Thanksgiving Dinner

 

Thursday, November 16th: Las Concordias speaker series

Judy Woodson spoke abour her award-winning music program, "Music Together", for mothers and their children. Music Together is an internationally recognized program for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, kindergartners and the adults who love them.

Thursday, November 9th: Honoring Willows Veterans

During the noon meal in our dining room, residents paid special tribute to members of The Willows community who have served their country in the armed forces.

Sunday, October 29th: Catalina Excursion

We'll be taking two boats to Catalina - the Balboa Island ferry across Newport Bay, then transferring to the Catalina Flyer for the trip to Avalon. We will join the Avalon Christian Science Society for their Sunday church service.

Thursday, October 26th: Board Dinner and Piano Concert by Richard Olsen

Richard gave his first piano recital when he was five, and from the time he was seven until he was 18, he held a solo recital each year.

He then exchanged his music career for a BA in Economics, becoming a business executive and benefactor in San Francisco's civic activities.

After retiring, he rediscovered the piano and has been performing again in the U.S. and Europe. Just last month he played in the Berlin Amateur Piano Competition. During his program at The Willows, he talked about that experience.

When Dr. Annette Kreutziger-Herr discovered that there are no Mary Baker Eddy biographies in print for the German field, she decided to write one. She shared some of the fascinating findings from her research for her 'work in progress', a book about "Mary Baker Eddy and the book of Genesis". This was a fund raiser to help pay for the continuation of this project.

Sunday, July 2nd: 50 years at the Willows

We celebrated the founding of The Willows in 1956. Music was everywhere: piano and guitar all afternoon -- and drums sprinkled in, and a strolling barbershop quartet.

On-going house and garden tours, face painting, balloons, popcorn, cotton candy, and a few other surprises culminated with our wonderful ice cream social at 5:00 PM. Thanks for joining us to celebrate our 50th year.

Friday, June 23rd: Susan Mack in concert with "The Solo Committee"

Susan Mack is a singer and songwriter whose healing messages take joy and inspiration to all who hear her.

This fundraiser for The Willows began at 5:30 PM with a catered beef tenderloin dinner. The music program, in Hodges Hall, followed dinner.

Saturday, June 17th: Broadview's Health Care Workshop

Broadview presented a workshop covering three important health care issues: Medicare, Advance Health Care Directives, and health insurance. Each subject is specifically tailored for Christian Scientists. The speakers were:

  • Michael Fisher, Executive Director of Broadview
  • Susan Foy, Orange County-based attorney
  • Lee Bedient, Willows resident

Mr. Fisher showed how Medicare is a financial tool available to help Christian Scientists pay for nursing care. He also cleared up some misconceptions about Medicare. Ms. Foy discussed the benefits of AHCD for the individual Christian Scientist. Ms. Bedient talked about insurance policies for Christian Scientists that supplement Medicare and pay for care at Christian Science facilities when Medicare is not an option.

Fresh-baked, homemade goodies were for sale at the Craft Club's annual Bake Sale, in the Garden Room.

Thursday, May 25th: "That's Entertainment" - Irvine Senior Follies

A variety show filled with song and dance, light and patriotic - real feel-good entertainment.

Sat. May 27th: "Finding Neverland"

 

April 27th: Board Speaker: Erwin Cornelius

Erwin, who settled into the Willows scene last summer with his wife, Jan, spoke on a subject dear to his hear -- what the U.S. Constitution brings to mankind, and to Americans in particular.

He also showed a film based on the Marbury vs. Madison case - a "you are there" event filmed in period costume.

April 22nd: Mark Twain and Me - a Disney Channel movie.

This delightful, true story is told by a 12 year old girl when she meets and works with "S.L.C." as she affectionately calls Mark Twain. The movie will be shown in Hodges Hall at 2 PM and again at 4 PM.

April 20th: Las Concordias Speaker - Carol Reynolds

Carol Reynolds, of Laguna Beach, is known for "marching to her own beat." In 1998 she founded the Laguna Community Concert Band. It was not meant to be a "street band", but a serious musical enterprise. And in the years that followed she's managed to create just that, relying on God to meet each need.

April 14th: Games Day

Back again after a lapse of time, the next Games Day is scheduled to begin at 2 PM. You may join in, or begin, a game anytime you arrive. And, you are welcome to bring your own games.

Thursday, March 23rd, Talk: Susan Cobb, C.S.

Susan Cobb, C.S., was the Board Dinner guest speaker in Hodges Hall. Her volunteer work in local jails inspired Susan to enter the full time practice of healing. She has been a Journal-listed practitioner since 1991. Living in San Clemente, she is well known to residents in our area.

Friday, March 17th: Principia Musicians on Tour

A select group of Principia College musicians performed a variety of music played on the piano, flute, and violin and exquisitely sung by trained vocalists.

Award-winning musicians included the principal flutist and concertmaster of the St. Louis Symphony Youth Orchestra and the winner of the Southern Illinois Young Artist Competition in 2005. The music majors cultivate their talent in the rigorous atmosphere offered by the Principia College music program.

This event was sponsored by the local Principia Club.

Thursday, March 16th: The Reading Room in Mrs. Eddy's Day

Linda Bargmann (who has a wide knowledge of reading rooms) talked about the reading room in Mrs. Eddy's day.

Thursday, March 9th: Clothing Sale

The Young and The Restofus clothing sale will be held again this year in the Garden Room from 10 AM to 3 PM.

Saturday, March 4th: Cultural Center talk

Carol Clothier, an Arden Wood visiting nurse, will talk about her plans to set up a working farm and spiritual retreat. She will be in the Cultural Center.

Thursday, February 23rd, Board Night Program:

Singer Jennifer Hart's repertoire featured melodies from Duke Wellington to Andrew Lloyd Weber.

Thursday, February 16th: Las Concordias

Speaker Marcella Lehr spoke about her experiences as a project manager for the reconstruction of two Maybeck-built dorms on the Principia college campus.
